Spring Cleaning Your Home and Your Insurance

Spring has a way of motivating us. After attending a West Chester & Liberty Chamber Alliance event where a professional organizer shared tips on decluttering for peace of mind, it got me thinking—we’re great about spring cleaning our homes, but we rarely think to do the same with our insurance coverage.

The reality is, life changes quickly. New cars, home updates, growing families, and new hobbies all add up—but your insurance doesn’t automatically adjust with those changes. That can leave you:

  • Underinsured as home values and construction costs rise
(Have you added on, remodeled, or finished a basement?)
  • Missing important coverage for new drivers, valuables, or lifestyle changes
  • Unsure about life insurance needs or whether your current policy still fits

Declutter What No Longer Fits

Just like cleaning out a closet, it’s important to remove what no longer serves you. Ask yourself:

  • Are there vehicles, boats, or recreational items on your policy you no longer own or use?
  • Have your kids moved out and started their independent (“adulting”) lives?
  • Did you sell a second home or rental property—or are you planning to purchase one?

Removing outdated or unnecessary coverage helps keep your policy accurate—and ensures you’re not paying for protection you no longer need.

Refresh What You Keep

Spring is also the perfect time to review and update the coverage you do need:

  • Deductibles and liability limits
(Do your umbrella policy limits still align with your current lifestyle?)
  • New or evolving risks, such as:
    • Teen drivers
    • Working from home
    • High-value items (jewelry, collectibles, equipment)
    • Even a new pet

Peace of Mind, Without the Clutter

The goal isn’t more insurance, it’s the right insurance.

After a spring or renewal review, your coverage should feel clear, current, and aligned with your life today. Making insurance reviews part of your seasonal routine helps ensure everything keeps up—so your coverage works quietly in the background while you enjoy the season.

I’ve also included a spring home maintenance checklist to help you get started around the house.

Happy cleaning!
