Peace of Mind Starts with Preparation: My Top Tips for Protecting Yourself and Your Car During Storm Season

As Thanksgiving approaches, I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude. Thank you for trusting me—and our entire OneDigital team—to help protect what matters most to you and your family. It’s truly an honor to serve you.

With the holiday season upon us, it’s also a good time to think about preparation—especially when it comes to staying safe on the road. Whether it’s a surprise thunderstorm or an icy November morning, a little readiness can make all the difference.

Here are a few simple steps to help you protect your vehicle and your peace of mind this season.

1. Keep Your Vehicle Maintained

A well-maintained car is your first line of defense. Regular oil changes, tire checks, and battery inspections are essential. Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly and that your washer fluid is full. Don’t forget to check that your defrosters are doing their job too—clear windows are crucial when visibility drops.

2. Check Your Tires

Good tires are your best friend in wet or icy conditions. I always say, “Don’t wait for the snow to fall to realize your tires are bald.”

I once worked with a family who had two tire blowouts in a single season, both leading to major damage. Tires may not be cheap, but your safety is priceless. Rotate them regularly, check the tread, and don’t ignore warning signs like uneven wear or low pressure.

3. Protect Your Car from Hail

I’ll never forget the day a hailstorm hit while I was out driving. It came out of nowhere. Luckily, I was able to pull into a car wash bay and wait it out—it ended up being the best decision I made that day.

If you don’t have access to a garage, consider keeping a thick blanket or a hail cover handy. A little preparation can prevent a lot of damage.

4. Stock a Car Emergency Kit

You never know when you might get stuck or stranded, and a few simple supplies can make all the difference. I always keep these items in my trunk:

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight

  • Blanket

  • First aid kit

  • Portable phone charger

  • Snacks and water

These essentials can keep you warm, safe, and connected if you’re ever caught in bad weather.

5. Review Your Insurance Coverage

This is where I can help directly. Many policies cover wind and hail, but flood damage is a different story. Flood coverage is not included in standard homeowners insurance. If you live in or near a flood-prone area, it’s worth having a conversation about your options.

I’ve helped many families find affordable flood coverage that gave them real peace of mind. A few minutes spent reviewing your policy can save you from major headaches down the road.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Storms may be unpredictable, but your response doesn’t have to be. By taking these steps, you’re not just protecting your home and car—you’re protecting your family’s well-being.

As you travel the highways and byways of life this season, I encourage you to prepare now, so you can breathe easier later. And remember, I’m always here to help you review your coverage or talk through a plan that fits your needs.

Stay safe out there.

Blessings,

Cyber Crimes & Kindness: When Being Helpful Costs You $30,000

Let’s talk about something that’s becoming all too common in today’s digital world: cyber crimes. Not the Hollywood-style hacking with green code raining down the screen, but the sneaky, manipulative kind that preys on good-hearted people who just want to help. Recently, one of my clients—an intelligent, thoughtful person—was taken for $30,000. Why? Because they wanted to be helpful. That’s it. No reckless clicking, no shady websites. Just a desire to do the right thing.

I hope you’re finding ways to stay cool during this record-breaking summer heat! My family and I just wrapped up a 2,000-mile road trip that took us from celebrating my granddaughter’s 6th birthday in Florida to marking my son-in-law’s 40th in North Carolina. It was a trip full of laughter, love, and plenty of miles, along with a fair share of heavy traffic and unpredictable weather. Clearly, we weren’t the only ones traveling this summer.
