I hope you’re finding ways to stay cool during this record-breaking summer heat!
My family and I just wrapped up a 2,000-mile road trip that took us from celebrating my granddaughter’s 6th birthday in Florida to marking my son-in-law’s 40th in North Carolina. It was a trip full of laughter, love, and plenty of miles, along with a fair share of heavy traffic and unpredictable weather. Clearly, we weren’t the only ones traveling this summer.
But one moment from the journey has stayed with me.
On our way from Florida to North Carolina, we passed a tragic accident scene, over 20 emergency vehicles, lights flashing, and a tent set up in the middle of the highway. At first, I thought it was a single car wedged under a semi-truck. But as we drove by, I realized it was two vehicles—a young driver had collided with a minivan carrying a family, and both ended up under a parked semi-trailer.
Only one person, a 16-year-old girl from the minivan, survived. Her condition is still unknown.
That sight has weighed heavily on me ever since. I’ve found myself thinking often of those families and keeping them in my prayers. It was a stark reminder of how vulnerable young drivers can be, and how important it is to give them real-world driving experience beyond what they learn in driver’s ed.
If you have young drivers in your life, I encourage you to look into programs that provide hands-on training in their own vehicles. One I’ve heard great things about is linked below. It could make all the difference in helping them feel more confident and keeping them safer on the road.
Stay safe,
