Liability

Most businesses need some form of liability insurance. Depending on the specific nature of your business, you’ll want to consider how the following coverages can help protect your business against the various risks it faces.

General Liability covers bodily injury and property damage resulting from a company’s products, services, or operations. In other words, it helps cover medical expenses and attorney fees for which a business may be legally responsible. The following general liability terms are  helpful to know:

  • Premises Liability: If a third party becomes injured on your property (slip & fall).
  • Products Liability: If a product or service causes injury to someone’s body or inflicts damage on a
    consumer’s personal property.
  • Personal Injury: If your business inflicts physical, financial, or mental injury to a third party.
  • Advertisement Injuries: If alleged misinformation, copyright infringement, or slander occurs.

Cyber Liability protects businesses from a cyber attack or interruption that can cause a loss in data, revenue, and trust between a business and its customers. Learn more.

Management Liability hybrid policies can combine the following four types of coverage. These policies can also be obtained individually.

  • Directors & Officers covers losses caused by a director or officer’s alleged mismanagement or improper conduct.
  • Employment Practices Liability (EPL) covers wrongful acts that occur during the employment process. It reimburses your company for defense costs, judgements, and settlements. Legal costs are covered regardless of whether the company wins or loses the suit
(punitive damages or civil/criminal fines are not typically covered). Frequent claims examples include discrimination, wrongful termination, harassment, and retaliation.
  • Fiduciary Liability covers losses resulting from mismanagement of employee benefits and
    pension plans.
  • Professional Liability/Errors & Omissions protects against claims that a service provided caused a client to suffer due to a mistake on the part of the business, or because a business failed to perform a service. This policy can cover the cost of defending your business in a civil lawsuit. Depending on the industry, professional liability may be required by law.
  • Crime Insurance covers losses resulting from employee or outsider criminal activity such as theft, fraud, forgery, and employee dishonesty.
